The Story of Poland in Posters

Orchard Lake, MI (4-7-25) – The Polish Institute of Culture & Research at Orchard Lake is proud to present The Story of Poland in Posters, a compelling exhibition exploring the rich legacy of Polish poster art from the late nineteenth century through the modern era. Curated by Elijah Majeski, Galeria Manager, and Dr. John Radzilowski, Director of the Polish Institute of Culture & Research, the exhibition on view in the Galeria on the campus of the Orchard Lake Schools through Sunday, May 24, 2026, offers a vivid visual narrative of Poland’s cultural, artistic, and historical evolution.

Widely regarded as one of Poland’s most distinctive artistic contributions, poster art transcended its commercial origins to become a powerful medium of expression. Particularly during the communist period, artists used posters to communicate layered meanings, often navigating censorship with symbolism, abstraction, and striking visual language. This exhibition traces that evolution, from early lithographic works to the internationally celebrated Polish School of Posters and beyond.

Featuring works by renowned artists such as Jan Styka, Stefan Norblin, Waldemar Świerzy, Józef Mroszczak, Rafał Olbiński, and others, the collection highlights key moments in Polish history, from national identity and religious devotion to theater, film, and everyday life. Visitors will encounter posters that are not only visually compelling but deeply rooted in the Polish experience.

“This exhibition invites our community to experience Poland’s history not only through words, but through powerful imagery,” said Ania Bieciuk, Associate Director for Polonia Affairs. “Each poster tells a story of resilience, creativity, and identity, reflecting the enduring spirit of Polish culture that we are honored to preserve and share.”

The exhibition may be experienced during scheduled events at the Galeria. Visitors are encouraged to view the Institute’s event calendar online for public access opportunities.
