An Unforgettable Program of Passion, Lyricism, and Discovery
Concertgoers will experience the expressive power of the Romantic era through three richly emotional works for piano quartet, performed by renowned musicians from the Detroit Symphony Orchestra alongside pianist Kazimierz Brzozowski. The evening’s program highlights both beloved classics and rarely heard treasures:
Featured Works
Robert Schumann – Piano Quartet in E-flat Major, Op. 47
Composed in 1842 and dedicated to Russian cellist Matthieu Wielhorsky, Schumann’s radiant and lyrical quartet was written with his wife Clara in mind, who would perform as pianist at the premiere on December 8, 1844, in Leipzig, Germany.
Gustav Mahler – Piano Quartet in A Minor
A brooding, youthful work premiered at the Vienna Conservatory in 1876, this one-movement quartet was written by Mahler at age sixteen and remains his only surviving chamber music composition. It later appeared in the soundtrack of Martin Scorsese’s 2010 motion picture Shutter Island.
Władysław (Ladislas) Żeleński (1837–1921) – Piano Quartet in C Minor, Op. 61
Composed around 1907 and published in 1910, Żeleński’s Piano Quartet is a great late-Romantic work by the outstanding Polish composer from Kraków. Rarely performed for decades, it has been only recently rediscovered and is celebrated today for its depth, drama, and sweeping passion.
