Polish Independence Day 2024

November 11, 2024

Today, as we commemorate Poland’s 106th Independence Day, we also pause to honor Veterans Day here in the United States. These two holidays, observed together, invite us to reflect on the profound connections between our Polish heritage and the sacrifices of men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces.

For Polish Americans, this day carries a dual significance. Our ancestors endured generations of struggle to see a free Poland restored in 1918, and yet many of them also found themselves building new lives in the United States—a country that welcomed them and offered them freedom and opportunity. They brought with them a deep commitment to liberty, and many were called to serve and protect that very ideal on American soil. Polish immigrants and their descendants have worn American military uniforms with pride, standing alongside their brothers and sisters in service to safeguard the freedoms they so deeply cherished.

Today, we honor both those who fought for a free Poland and those who fought—and continue to fight—for freedom here in the United States. We recognize the unique position we hold as Polish Americans, blessed with the heritage of two great nations. In celebrating Poland’s independence, we remember the spirit of resilience passed down through generations. And on this Veterans Day, we extend our deepest gratitude to those who have served, protecting the liberties that our forebears dreamed of and that we are privileged to enjoy.

May this day remind us of the courage and sacrifice that transcend borders, binding us in a shared commitment to freedom and unity.
